60 year old grandma & 9 year old grandson team up together
to make fun-themed, colorful Pillowcases for you to have a Goodnight sleep.
My name is Kathy Slack and in August 2014 my 9 year old son Michael
asked me, while at our local bank, when he could take his money out of savings.
I told him that when he turned 18 since he is saving to buy his first car or
put money towards renting his first apartment. He told me he wanted to buy a
house and not rent an apartment. I told him he needed about 60-70 thousand
dollars to do that and his reply was “Well, then I better start my own
business now”.
Within a few hours of coming back home Michael had his plan in place and asked
his grandma, Tamara, if she would like to join him on his new business venture.
The venture was to make standard sized pillowcases that are fun-themed, colorful
and best of all, for a goodnights sleep. From there the business name developed
into “Goodnight Pillowcases”.
Just to give you some background on both Michael and Tamara please sit back with
a good cup of coffee and I’ll tell you. Tamara is 60 years old and has moved in
to live with us a few years ago when her health had started to fail. She has many
health problems but she is not a dweller of them. She enjoys playing solitaire on
the computer and also shopping online, especially for purses. She has her own
sewing machine and has been sewing clothes and hemming items for years. She
enjoys keeping busy and loves to be around her family all the time.
Tamaras’ job in the business will be to sew the pillowcases since she
is an exceptional seamstress.
Her back up duties will be to cut, pin and iron the fabric when necessary.
Michael is 9 years old and about to enter into 4th grade. He is a Cub Scout Webelos
and enjoys playing outdoors with his friends. He also likes Minecraft online and of
course, building with Legos. He uses my sewing machine for projects and is always
keeping busy. He knows how to make a bobbin, sew in a straight line and his latest
project was making a Superman pillow for his new bedroom. Michaels’ job in the
business will be to mark, cut, pin and iron the fabric. His back up duties will
be to sew the pillowcases when necessary. One evening at dinner with friends,
I was mentioning the new business idea that Michael & Tamara were about
to embark upon and she told me all about Kickstarter. (Thank you Brenda Dane!!!)
As Michael & Tamara’s business organizer (I am not an owner, just a volunteer
and supporter), I want to make sure they have enough money for supplies to get
started and be successful!! Our goal is to raise enough money to purchase the
materials to begin making our store stock from beautiful fun-themed new fabrics
to matching spools of thread. I haven’t been to a fabric shop in years and
didn’t realize how much the price per yard is now! It will also cover the costs
of buying the website domain, starting up an etsy.com store, mailing out
the Kickstarter rewards and also the percentage costs by third
parties related to making this project into a reality. I figured if their
business was going to soar, then I wanted them going in the right direction.
So I began my research and started developing the business side of things
for both of them. And here we are…from a conversation in a local bank to
the child with an image of owning a business and the grandmother who is
now a partner. They are ready to start working hard making fun-themed
standard pillowcases to sell. We thank you for your consideration and
support in backing our project!!!
Our risks and challenges that we might face are within ourselves.
What I mean by that is, since Tamara does have health issues and Michael is
a minor in school soon I see our challenges being within the production line
itself. But the great news to anyone who understands these challenges is
that I, Katherine Slack, will be the back up to any challenge they face.
If they need material purchased, cut out or sewn I can take it upon myself
to complete all projects. Once we are fully funded we will have 27 custom
order pillowcases that will be made just for our Reward Backers. All the
pillowcases produced from that point on can be done at the leisure of
Tamara & Michael to stock their online etsy store. The online store
will go live and “open for business” once they have over 20 completed
standard Goodnight Pillowcases for sale. Due to the unique challenges
of Health and School is the reason why not every Goodnight Pillowcase
will be a custom order, only the 27 Reward Backers. The fabrics chosen
to make the pillowcases will be hip, stylish, cool and fun!! The goal
is for Michael to cut out the material for each pillowcase, measure
and pin it then complete his part and iron it. During the days, once
Michael is in school, Tamara will sew the pillowcases. At any given
time they can reverse their roles and I can also step in to make
sure production is moving along in the case of a health emergency
or school workload.
